#7 Providence Swept By Defending Champion #12 UMass

Cody Monds scored to cut the deficit to one early in the third period, but three unanswered goals powered No. 12 UMass past No. 7/8 Providence College, 5-1, on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.

NOTES
– The Minutemen recorded the opening goal 2:21 into the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Cal Kiefuik was assisted by Anthony Del Gaizo on the play.
-Providence outshot UMass, 12-11, through the opening twenty minutes. The Friars killed off two penalties in the period.
-Both teams were scoreless in the middle period. The Friars failed to convert on two power play chances and outshot the Minutemen 14-9.
-UMass grabbed a two-goal lead, 2-0, with a goal by Slava Demin 1:16 into the final period.
-Providence responded 2:21 later with a goal from Cody Monds to cut the UMass lead to 2-1. Monds was assisted by Brett Berard and Michael Callahan on his second goal of the season.
-UMass notched three more goals in the final frame, with two on the power play, to finish out at 5-1.
-Matt Murray finished with 41 saves for the Minutemen.
