Best PS5 Indie Games
Kena: Bridge of Spirits (PS5)
Mighty Goose (PS5)
One of the highest profile indie releases in recent years is Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and it’s turned out to be a great debut title from studio Ember Lab. Playing as a young spirit guide, you’ll traverse through beautiful environments as you help a village and its inhabitants fight back against a dark blight on the land. It’s a gorgeous 3D platformer with surprisingly challenging combat and a boatload of collectibles to find. While there are one or two difficulty spikes and the story doesn’t quite stick the landing, this remains an extremely pleasant game from start to finish.
Mighty Goose might present itself as a silly indie game not to be taken seriously, but it’s a surprisingly good run n’ gunner. Playing similarly to games like Metal Slug, you’re put in control of a bounty hunter goose on a mission to destroy the bad guys, with multiple weapons to use and vehicles to commandeer. Great visual feedback and fun gameplay will keep you engaged, and the action all looks and sounds good too with lovely presentation. It’s just a honkin’ good time.
Toem (PS5)
It might not look it, but Toem is a game all about photography. Presented like an adventure game with a top-down view, you’ll visit various picturesque locations on your journey to the mountain. Along the way you’ll need to help out a brilliant cast of characters with photo-based tasks, and it’s here where the camera zooms into first person so you can take some snaps. With simple but effective writing, engaging puzzles, and a wonderful aesthetic, Toem is a short but very sweet indie game. Cyber Shadow (PS5)
If you’re looking for an old-school style challenge, look no further than Cyber Shadow. Evoking games like Ninja Gaiden, this is a no nonsense action platformer about a ninja attempting to save the city from a synthetic threat. As you progress, you’ll unlock cool new abilities and upgrades, giving you new tools throughout the adventure. It’s a tough one, though — boss fights and even some tricky levels will really test your skills. Demon Turf (PS5)
Demon Turf brings a unique and stylish spin to traditional 3D platformers. Playing as young demon Beebz looking to overthrow the Demon King, this game is all about precision platforming with responsive controls and a range of technical abilities. You unlock more moves as you beat each turf, slowly turning Beebz into a force to be reckoned with. With its striking art style, player-positioned checkpoints, and oodles of levels and challenges, this is a great platformer blending old and new together.
