During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct Mini, which highlighted third-party titles, Return to Monkey Island made an appearance.
The major news is that Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, the long-awaited sequel to Secret of Monkey Island, will debut on the Nintendo Switch before other gaming systems.
Ron Gilbert first made it known at the beginning of April that his future sequel would be created in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games. Guybrush Threepwood was shown in the video for yesterday’s Nintendo Mini Direct exploring the island’s treacherous caves, ships, and aquatic environments.
Return to Monkey Island features a new visual aesthetic than earlier games. Personally, the aesthetic looks fantastic; it has a hand-drawn storybook appearance. Characteristics like big heads and short limbs are emphasised.

Return to Monkey Island release date
There is no precise date for the release on Nintendo Switch, but it is said to be later this year.
Ron Gilbert, the creator of the series, first teased Return to Monkey Island on 1st April 2022 before revealing it publicly on 3rd April. It was later revealed to be a new instalment in the cherished Monkey Island point-and-click adventure game series from LucasArts, published by Devolver Digital in association with the recently reformed LucasFilm Games.
As part of the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, Devolver unveiled gameplay for Return to Monkey Island after going nearly three months without an update despite its 2022 release date.
Return to Monkey Island trailer
Return to Monkey Island is a colourful point-and-click adventure game with amusing cutscenes and 2D swashbuckling between each chapter. There will undoubtedly be a ton of puzzles to work out as well as bizarre individuals to meet and occasionally battle. You can watch the trailer below:
The narrative from Monkey Island 2 and The Secret of Monkey Island is continued in this game. Guybrush and LeChuck square off once more, but this time, allies like Elaine Marley are there to support him. A few of the games’ original voice actors are also making a comeback. Young pirate captains arrive to “spoil the celebration,” thus there are also some fresh faces.
