The Atari Recharged series rolls into town again with their sixth release since Centipede: Recharged reminded the world of Atari. Their renaissance continues with a remake of one of their best-selling games of all-time, and yet it feels more niche than some of the others. Yars: Recharged is out today on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS and PC.
A Yar is a flying bug-like creature that can fire bullets and chew through almost anything. It needs both of these to break down shields and barriers and destroy the hostile Qotile Cores that are firing back at them. And in true bullet hell style, you need eyes all over the screen to watch out for projectiles heading your way almost as much as you need to look where you are shooting.
Yars: Recharged follows the now standard conventions of the Recharged games with two main modes: an Arcade mode comprising of 30 increasingly difficult levels and Mission mode with another 30 more experimental levels to get your mandibles into. How difficult I hear you ask? Our review of Yars: Recharged has all the answers.
Yars: Recharged is on the Xbox Store now priced at £7.99. This isn’t the first Yars game on Xbox, but due to a lack of backwards compatibility, it is the only one available on current consoles. You’ll also find the game on PlayStation, Switch, Atari VCS and PC.

Game description
A daring attack against the enemy homeworld, guarded by mechanical hives that pulse deadly cannons and emit flurries of swirling missiles. Shoot from range as you find pockets of safety amongst the hail of incoming fire, and then dart forward in daring forays to nibble away at the enemies defenses. Gather enough energy by destroying the enemy’s shields and you can power up your massively destructive Zorlon cannon, which sends searing blasts of golden energy into the enemy hive. Yars: Recharged is the latest title from Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox, the team behind the Atari Recharged series, infusing elements of arcade, shoot-em up, and bullet hell into the classic’s formula. Yars: Recharged requires players to remain acutely aware of visual and audio cues that hint of impending danger, and to master rhythm of each boss as they navigate increasingly complex enemy defenses, all to epic soundtrack by Megan McDuffee. The new game marks Atari’s return to the Yars universe, which is based on Howard Scott Warshaw’s classic Yars’ Revenge. Released in 1982.
