Parts of Sydney experienced a dramatic 10-degree temperature drop on Tuesday afternoon in just 90 minutes as a “significant” cold front makes its way across the state.
Between 12.30pm and 2pm, the temperature in Badgerys Creek in Sydney’s west fell from 21.1 degrees to 10.7 degrees in the short window with nearby suburbs also experiencing bursts of hail.
The hail was recorded across the city’s west in Cabramatta, Canley Vale, Fairfield and Bass Hill, but was also seen by residents in Sydney’s east in Coogee and Randwick.
Weatherzone meteorologist Yoska Hernandez said the plummeting temperatures have come as a result of strong southerly winds hitting just as the cold front makes its way towards Sydney.
“Across Sydney, we are experiencing an abrupt drop in temperatures which has seen an average (of) seven to nine-degree drops in the lapse of two hours from midday,” she said.
“Along the coast we will see winds exceeding 80km/h this afternoon and into the evening in some areas.”

Hernandez said the falling temperatures will also lead to snow in parts of the Blue Mountains as well as Orange, Lithgow and Bathurst across Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.
“With this sudden southerly wind change, it has led to a very cold air mass in the wake of this cold front,” she said.
