Resident Evil 4 Director Says The Game’s Camera Was Never Designed To Be Groundbreaking

Resident Evil 4‘s over-the-shoulder camera was never designed to be groundbreaking, the game’s director Shinji Mikami has revealed during a new video posted on the official Biohazard YouTube channel.

It felt natural, oddly enough. We weren’t planning on doing something innovative, but in the end everyone kept saying we did. To us personally, we just thought that angle was better. We weren’t trying to do something new or groundbreaking, there was none of that.

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai was one of the first people to heap praise on the viewpoint change, said Mikami-san.

“He came to check out the game in development and asked, ‘who came up with this camera system? ‘Hey, yeah, that was me.’ ‘This is great,’ he said. ‘Woah, really?’ I responded.”

Jun Takeuchi, who was working on Lost Planet during the development of Resident Evil 4, revealed that the Gears of War team approached him at E3 and revealed that the game’s camera was inspired by Capcom’s survival horror title.

During the development of Lost Planet, at our first E3, we were approached by the Gears of War team. They were all around us, checking out the Lost Planet camera. A bunch of them were asking why we weren’t using the Resident Evil 4 camera in the game. We were like: ‘Well, it’s a completely different game.’

Resident Evil 4 was released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube and later ported to numerous platforms including PS2, PS3, PS4, Wii, mobile, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Capcom is currently developing a full remake of the game for PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S, which is scheduled for release in March 2023.
