Ahead of the League of Legends World Championship aka Worlds 2022, Korean organization T1 has made changes to its organizational structure for the League of Legends division. T1’s CEO Joe Marsh announced in an on 5th August that after discussions with the team, and the players, the management has moved Choi “Polt” Seong-hun from his position as the head coach of T1’s League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) team and promoted three-time Worlds champions Bae “Bengi” Seong-woong as the interim head coach.
Polt to take over as general manager
In the official announcement, regarding Polt’s position in the organization, Joe said, “He [Polt] will continue with T1 as the General Manager for the overall League of Legends program – supporting our LCK, LCK Challengers, T1 Rookies, and T1 Esports Academy.”
He also thanked Polt for all that he’s done. “And while the decision for the change is by no means a reflection of anything that he did or did not do but more of a gut decision after extensive conversations within the organization. It was not an easy decision but the right one for the team,” stated Joe.
Joe noted that the results of the LCK Summer Playoffs final had no bearing on the decision since he was set on making the changes no matter the outcome.
Bengi promoted to interim head coach
Bengi has been a part of the T1 family since the storied SK Telecom T1 (SKT T1) days and notably, he won three Worlds trophies as a player. Starting 5th September, T1 announced that Bengi will be elevated to the post of interim head coach. “He has played on the biggest stages in the world and knows what it takes to win, which is why I am making the change now – in order to increase the chances of achieving our ultimate goal of winning our 4th Worlds Championship.”
The organization’s statement also noted a new addition to its League of Legends team – Kim “Sky” Ha-neul – who shall assume the role of coach to the main roster for Worlds. Sky will work alongside Bengi and Kim “Moment” Ji-hwan, who will remain in his role.
Joe Marsh reinstated that all the decisions were made with the goal of helping T1 lift the Worlds trophy again in the coming months. Notably, Polt joined T1 as a general manager back in 2020 before taking on the responsibility of the head coach. During his tenure, he helped the team scale great heights. The team had a perfect run and went 18-0 in the LCK 2022 Spring Split and won the title, and then made it to the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI).
