Sports gaming license approved for Valley | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN – Ohio’s Casino Control Commission has green-lit a sports gaming proprietor license for one of the two applicants from the Mahoning Valley.

Wednesday’s approval means Youngstown Real Estate Ventures, LLC (Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course) can operate online and in-person sports books starting Jan. 1, when sports betting becomes legal in Ohio.

Absent from the approvals list, however, was Phantom Fireworks Inc., the Youngstown-based fireworks distributor that wants to operate a sports book at downtown Youngstown’s Covelli Centre.

William Weimer, vice president of Phantom Fireworks, said its application is incomplete.

“We’re still putting our project together,” Weimer said. “There is no rush on it. They (the commission) didn’t act on it because we don’t have all the pieces together and we are working to put them all together.”
