Despite facing multiple delays, it seems as if the long-awaited current-gen upgrade for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may be getting close to release.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has given an update on when the current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades for the title will release. The action role-playing game was released in 2015 to high acclaim, and despite already boasting impressive visuals on last-gen devices, many players are eager to see the title running with the ray-tracing, higher frame rates, and resolutions that current-gen devices can provide.
Witcher 3‘s current-gen upgrade has had several delays already, possibly due in part to CD Projekt Red choosing to prioritize fixing the many bugs and broken features present in Cyberpunk 2077 at its launch. Many also briefly believed the upgrade had been canceled when CDPR moved production on the upgrade away from an external developer in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite CD Projekt Red bringing the project in-house and changing the release date to an ominous “until further notice“, the studio went on to clarify that the upgrade had not been canceled.
In CD Project Red’s latest financial statement (via PlayStation Lifestyle), the developer revealed that Witcher 3‘s PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade was on track for a 2022 release, targeting the fourth quarter of the year. This release window aligns with a statement made by CDPR on its official The Witcher Twitter account in May that celebrated the title’s seventh anniversary and listed “Q4 2022” as the release for its upgrade.
CDPR Is Also Working On A New Witcher Saga
Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red revealed it was already working on a new The Witcher title with a tease that showed a red-eyed feline Witcher medallion partially submerged in snow. While many initially believed this to be The Witcher 4, it has since been confirmed that this is not the case and that the next The Witcher title would start a new saga in the series. The upcoming title is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 as part of a multi-year deal with Epic Games, and likely won’t see characters like Geralt returning, with CDPR previously stating that the earlier games were intended to be a contained story told across a trilogy of titles.
News that CD Projekt Red is still aiming to release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s current-gen upgrade this year will surely please fans who have been waiting since its announcement back in 2020. The upgrade is due to offer a range of technical improvements and will be free to those who already have the game on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
