The PlayStation 5’s latest firmware update, rolling out today, is adding USB storage support and more.
The good news is you’ll be able to store PlayStation 5 games on a USB drive! The bad news is you won’t be able to play them until you copy them to your PlayStation 5’s internal SSD drive. Still, it’s a much-needed step up and it should save you re-downloading games you’re not playing.
It also brings the PlayStation 5 mostly into line with the Xbox Series X/S. We say mostly because there are in fact some ‘Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games’ that will run off an external hard drive. But, going forward, you can expect to have to run the latest Xbox Series X/S titles off internal SSD.

Other enhancements include:
- Share play across PS5 and PS4
- Being able to disable in-game chat
- Customising your screen zoom
- Pre-downloading updates
You can find a full list of new features here. Depending on how you’ve got your PS5 set up, the update may auto-download when you turn your PS5 on. Otherwise, you’ll be prompted to install it the next time you use your console.
