PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Sean Richard tied a program record with 18 saves and Devon Cowan scored late in the fourth overtime to lift the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team past Providence, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Cown drove to the front of the net from behind the cage on the left side with time winding down and scored the game winner with three seconds remaining. The victory is Marquette’s second overtime win of the week, following Wednesday’s victory over St. John’s at Valley Fields.
Cowan and redshirt senior Connor McClelland each scored two goals for Marquette (3-7, 2-6 BIG EAST), while Griffin Fleming, Peter Henkhaus and Holden Patterson also scored. The win keeps the Golden Eagles in the mix for a BIG EAST tournament berth as MU currently sits half a game behind Providence, which is 3-6 in BIG EAST action, for the fourth spot.
PC’s Ryan Zimmerman got the scoring started just 18 seconds into regulation but MU held the Friars off the board until the 2:46 mark of the second quarter when he notched his second. The Golden Eagles took a 4-2 lead into halftime following the Henkhaus goal with 1:46 left in the frame.
Fleming’s lone tally came with three seconds left in the third quarter and the Friars scored four times in the fourth quarter to tie the game.
Marquette led 6-3 late in the fourth, but PC scored three goals over the final 3:15 of regulation, including Matt Grillo’s tying score with nine seconds to play.
The Golden Eagles won all four face-offs in extra time and evenly split the 20 matchups at the dot with the Friars
Richard’s 18 saves tied him with Cole Blazer for the program single-game record. Blazer stopped 18 shots on March 3, 2017 against Ohio State.
Marquette is 6-3 all-time against PC but had lost the two most recent outings, including a 15-8 loss in its last trip to PC on April 13, 2019. Marquette’s most memorable game against the Friars at Chapey Field was a 10-9 win in the championship game of the BIG EAST tournament in 2017.
MU has a pair of road games on the schedule at Villanova and St. John’s on April 24 and 30, respectively.
