Just when you think the turn-based genre can’t do anything fresh, here comes Lemnis Gate which aims to bring something new to the table. It’s launching on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One this Summer.
Trying to explain the game is a bit of task, but the basic premise is players using a 25 second time loop to attempt to take out the enemy. Matches play out across five rounds, with either 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 battles. The aim is to allow players to build strategies in each round and outsmart their opponent in what is essentially a FPS chess battle. It sounds confusing, but the trailer does a great job of conveying it in action.
“This ingenious time loop mechanic lets players progressively build strategies, whether online or local, in both 1v1 and 2v2 matches. As more operatives enter the fray, the potential for creative cunning rises. There are seven operatives in total, each bringing a distinct primary weapon and special ability. Since every operative is available right from the start, players can start strategizing straight away. This subversive and skilful 4D FPS rewards non-linear logic and abstract thinking, challenging players to both plan ahead and change the past as they build up to victory.”
In a generation where FPS games are a dime a dozen, it’s not often you see something new brought to the table. This genuinely looks like a satisfying multiplayer experience that demands some skill and thoughtfulness. The 25 second time loop is a really cool addition, too.
