Burglar tried to attack victim with hammer as he stole Nintendo Switch during West Yorkshire house raid

Ian Rose took out the weapon and tried to attack the victim during the incident at the house in Hemsworth.

Leeds Crown Court heard Rose sneaked in through an open door at the property on Ashfield Road on May 8 this year.

Ayesha Smart, prosecuting, said the woman who lived at the property recognised Rose as they went to school together.

Rose picked up a Nintendo Switch console and went to leave but the woman’s partner tried to stop him.

He had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck and Rose then left the property with the console.

Rose, 42, was later arrested at his mum’s home.

He pleaded guilty to burglary.

The court heard it is the fourth time Rose, of Craven Road, Hemsworth, has been convicted of domestic burglary.

Mr Morton said Rose carried out the burglary in order to fund his addiction to drink and drugs.

Rose was jailed for five years and three months.

Judge Tom Bayliss QC said: “There are some cases where the record of the defendant, combined with your apparent inability or unwillingness to be rehabilitated, entitles the sentencing judge to depart from the sentencing guidelines, so there can be no doubt that the protection of the public is being considered first and foremost.

“This, in my judgement, is such a case.”
