Toge Productions and Mojiken Studios’ beautiful A Space for the Unbound is finally back on track for a worldwide console release after reaching a new publisher agreement with Chorus Worldwide. The game’s new publisher is responsible for bringing games such as Coffee Talk (and its upcoming sequel, Hibiscus & Butterflies), When The Past Was Around, and Dungeon Munchies to Switch.
This news follows accusations that the game’s previous publisher, PQube Games, took advantage of the developers’ Indonesian heritage and left them feeling “exploited”. PQube will no longer be publishing the game in any territory.
No new date has been announced for A Space for the Unbound, but according to a listing on Rakuten Japan, physical editions of the PS5 and Switch releases are dated for release on 19th January 2023 (via Gematsu).
Here is Mojiken and Toge’s statement from Twitter, which was also shared by Chorus Worldwide and PQube:
Dear fans of A Space for the Unbound:
We are pleased to confirm that Toge Productions, Mojiken Studio, PQube and Chorus Worldwide have reached an agreement to the satisfaction of all parties with regards to the release of A Space for the Unbound. For the PC version, Toge Productions will continue to publish the game worldwide, while Chorus Worldwide will now be the global publisher for all console versions. Release plans will be announced shortly.
Whilst there have been commercial differences in respect of some of the terms of the agreement between the parties, all parties would like to clarify that:
- All grant monies received by PQube were received by Toge Productions.
- PQube has fully supported the return of rights to Toge Productions.
No further public statements will be made on this matter by Toge, Mojiken, PQube, or Chorus. Toge, Mojiken, and PQube are grateful for the support of Chorus Worldwide in bringing together a mutually agreeable resolution, and respectfully wish each other well in their future endeavours. Toge Productions, Mojiken Studio, PQube, and Chorus Worldwide
PQube has also recently been accused by AeternoBlade II developer Corecell Team of “withholding payments“, and this still appears to be the case as of 6th September according to the developer.
A Space for the Unbound is an adventure game with a slice-of-life feel to it. Set in the late ’90s in Indonesia, it follows two high school sweethearts who have supernatural powers.
The game’s Steam page still gives a 2022 release date, but it sounds like we won’t have to wait long for an official date now.
