US publishing giant Activision has had a legal run-in with the creator of a browser game called Warzone.
As spotted by PC Gamer, the Call of Duty maker filed a legal complaint with the United States District Court for the Central District of California, saying that Warzone.com creator Fizzer sent it a cease and desist notice in November 2020 and has opposed the company’s application for the Warzone trademark.
Activision brought the matter to the court on April 8th, 2021.
Activision applied for the Warzone trademark in June 2020, with Warzone.com filing for the Warzone trademark the following October. In November, Warzone.com opposed Activision’s application in the trademark registration process.
Call of Duty: Warzone rolled out in March 2020; Warzone.com has been live since November 2017.
The COD publisher says that it’s incredibly unlikely that its Warzone battle royale mode and Warzone.com’s browser-based strategy board game offering will be confused.
Within four days of its launch, Call of Duty: Warzone had attracted 15 million users. In its financials for the year, Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick said that more than 250 million people had played Call of Duty games during 2020.
