Alton denies video gaming license request

ALTON – Aldermen meeting as a committee of the whole Monday night voted against amending the Alton City Code to increase the number of video gaming licenses.

In the resolution, there were four licenses sought: Farm Fresh Mini Mart, Heaterz Hot Chicken, Village Inn Pancake House and Milton Liquor and Grocery. Ward 2 Alderwoman Carolyn MacAfee made a motion to separate Milton Liquor and Grocery from the other businesses.

Back in August, after approving a video gaming license for Schwegel’s Market, the council instilled a cap on the number of licenses. Currently the number licenses is 38.

According to MacAfee, the situation involving Milton’s was different than the others because the business owner had paid his renewal fees, but was excluded from the original count due to miscommunication.

The motion for separating out the business failed 3-4, so the original motion continued with all four businesses. The motion to amend the city code was then denied 3-4.

A motion to increase the number of Class A liquor licenses to include Farm Fresh Mini Mart was layed over.

Also on Monday, aldermen approved:

• Temporarily closing sections of Illinois 140 and U.S. 67 to facilitate the Alton Halloween Parade 5-10 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.

• Amending the number of Class A liquor licenses and video gaming licenses to include Farm Fresh Mini Mart in Alton.

• Razing properties at 618 Ridge St., 217 Harriet St., 705 Sering Ave., 2126 Seminary St. and 607 Stole Ave 1/2.
