AMD boss Lisa Su expects that the chip shortage currently plaguing the PS5 and Xbox Series X is likely to continue until the second half of 2022.
Su made the comments at California’s Code Conference earlier today, where she anticipates that chip supplies will be “likely tight” during the first half of next year, but expect things to ease up as the second half of 2022 rolls around, when the efforts of new manufacturing plants are felt.
It might take, you know, 18 to 24 months to put on a new plant, and in some cases even longer than that. These investments were started perhaps a year ago.
A shortage of chips has resulted in fewer PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles being manufactured, resulting in severe stock shortages following initial launch numbers sold out. Even today, some 10 months after their release, both consoles are still not readily available in retailers around the globe.
Retailers including GAME and GameStop have managed to restock console supplies sporadically throughout the year, but these were quickly depleted after massive queues formed online.
The PS5 launched in November 2020 in the US, UK, Europe, and other major territories.
