It was revealed today that Sony plans to launch a new version of the PS5 in the 2023 fiscal year. According to reports from Insider Gaming, the company will replace all current models for the PS5 (A, B, and C Chassis models) with one that will have a detachable disc drive.
Inside Gamings also claims that the disc drive will now be connected to the PlayStation 5 with an extra USB-C port on the back of the console. In addition, disc drives for this version of the PS5 will be available separately, allowing owners to replace the ones that ship with the PS5 if the original break.
This rumored PS5 won’t be a massive departure from style and console spec, but as it’s gonna keep the look intact of the original model. Even so, the upcoming PS5 is a lot lighter and slimmer than the past PS5s, which Sony have been trying to implement for the past few years.
Sony is trying to produce around 18,5 million units of this new PS5 by 2023 FY, and 12 million units of the previous PS5s. The company plans to replace these models with a new detachable drive.
Since its launch, the PS5 has been an incredible success for Sony: it has shipped just over 22 million units now, starting June 2022. It’s still the most expensive console, as many struggled to buy a product of its own, even two years after its launch.
