If it wasn’t for the well-documented PS5 stock situation, it’s fair to assume that Sony’s current-gen console would be absolutely flying right now. But as it stands, the stock-strangled system is only just starting to dominate the gaming market, close to two years after its initial launch.
Stock improvements in the US have allowed the PS5 to finally top the charts in August 2022, following a string of recent defeats to the evergreen Nintendo Switch. Sony’s hefty device was the best-selling hardware of the month, both in terms of units and dollar sales (as per the ultra informative Mat Piscatella).
As for games, Madden NFL 23 topped the dollar sales charts for August, followed by Saints Row, and then Marvel’s Spider-Man — which saw a huge boost thanks to its release on PC. Overall, though, the industry’s still down year-on-year in terms of overall spend, but only by 5 per cent.
