Housemarque, the developer behind the PS5-exclusive Returnal, has been acquired by PlayStation. Here’s every game it released in the last 20 years.
Returnal launched on April 30 and was lauded not only for its gripping space-horror story and refreshing roguelike mechanics but for its use of the PS5’s new features. Players could feel drops of rain or the charging of a gun through the DualSense’s haptic feedback, and weapons allowed the pushing of its Adaptive Triggers in halfway for a regular shot and all the way down for a special attack.
Housemarque is a Finnish game development company perhaps best known for its most recent release, the PlayStation 5-exclusive Returnal. Housemarque’s motto is “Game is King,” and it therefore develops titles for a core gaming audience, focusing on gameplay mechanics and sharp graphics. The company was recently acquired by PlayStation following Returnal’s release, but Housemarque has 18 other games in its catalog – most focused on space exploration and many embracing the creepy nature of the otherworldly.
While Returnal pushed Housemarque into the mainstream, it’s hardly the studio’s first game. Most of its titles were released for PC or PlayStation systems; the last time one of Housemarque’s games was on Xbox was in 2011. The company’s commitment to Sony explains how it was able to so well curate Returnal for PS5 and, of course, why PlayStation acquired it. Here’s more about how Housemarque’s previous work led to Returnal’s success.
Nex Machina is a 2017 horror shoot ’em up born out of a fear many have in the real world: Humans have become dependent on technology, so much so they are physically unable to avert their eyes from their screens. Meanwhile, the machines around them have surpassed humanity and begin to exterminate its people. Nex Machina sets players on a course to save humanity.
All Housemarque Game Releases Before
Released in the same year for PS4, Matterfall is a side-scrolling shooter in which Earth has been infected with a strange alien material. Players must manipulate their environment as they master movement and fight to push out the alien invaders.
2016’s Alienation is a PS4 spiritual successor to Housemarque’s 2010’s Dead Nation. In the twin-stick shooter, aliens have taken over Earth, and players take part in humanity’s last stand and final chance to regain control.
Resogun is a 2013 voxel-based shooter in which players are similarly tasked with eliminating enemies and, by so doing, saving humans. Like Returnal on PS5, Resogun was developed specifically for PS4 as a launch game, designed to make the most of its graphical capabilities in order to give players an immersive experience. Other Housemarque games include:
Super Stardust Ultra (2015 – PS4) Super Stardust Delta (2012 – PS Vita)
Furmins (2012 – iOS, PS Vita) Dead Nation: Road to Devastation (2011 – PS3, PS4, PS Vita)
Outland (2011 – Xbox 360, PS3, PC) Dead Nation (2010 – PS3)
Super Stardust Portable (2008 – PSP) Golf: Tee It Up! (2008 – Xbox 360)
