Berserk Boy is an action-platformer developed by the studio with the same name (BerserkBoy Games) and published by Big Sugar. The indie is set for release on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in Q4 2022, so more than a year from now.
As the title says, Berserk Boy promises an authentic, lovingly crafted retro aesthetic with a visual style influenced by the classic look of Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games. Equally important, the 16-bit soundtrack of the game is made by Sonic Mania composer, Tee Lopes.
Fans of the genre should expect tight platforming, gorgeously illustrated cut-scenes, a variety of play styles, and a rewarding upgrade system. It’s important to mention that Berserk Boy is the premiere title from developer BerserkBoy Games, a six-strong global collective, as the team is spread across Japan, United States, Indonesia, and the UK.
“I’m a huge fan of the genre. It’s where most of my favorite characters and franchises come from. Mega Man, Sonic, Pulseman, Gunvolt. I want to put Berserk Boy’s name up there as well!” explains Studio founder, lead dev, pixel artist, and animator, Zu Ehtisham.
Even though Berserk Boy is a retro-inspired 2D action platformer, it does come with an interesting twist, as players will be able to change into different forms and use the power of Lightning, Fire, Earth, Air, and Ice as they race through stylish stages.
While changing into different Berserk forms, players can absorb unique abilities. However, to be able to merge with the five force orbs, you’ll have to chain together combos to fill your Berserk Meter and trigger a form’s special attack.
Since we’re more than a year away from the game’s release, fans of the genre might want to wishlist Berserk Boy on Steam to learn more about the upcoming indie title.
