The Macau SAR gaming sector has reported almost MOP3.6 billion (US$455.1 million) in March of this year, the lowest monthly tally since September, 2020 when only MOP2.2 billion in gaming results was reported.
The results also represent a sudden 52.6 per cent drop from the previous month as the pandemic situation in mainland China and the neighbouring regions deteriorated to its worst levels since the outbreak two years ago.
The first three months of this year have reported an accumulated MOP17.7 billion, a 25 per cent fall from the same period last year.
The month has seen a worsening of the pandemic situation in mainland China, with lockdowns enforced in several major cities such as Shanghai and the neighbouring cities of Dongguan and Shenzhen.
This led local authorities to impose a 14-day quarantine for people coming from high-risk areas in the mainland, including areas in major cities in Guangdong, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan and Zhongshan, causing a considerable drop in the SARs visitation numbers.
The worsening pandemic situation also generated several plunges in the stock prices of Macau’s gaming concessionaires this month.
