Bungie is getting into the esports scene with a new game franchise? That’s the word on the street. Destiny 2 fans can also heave a sigh of relief, as this new game will live on alongside Destiny 2, so we’ll still see content for that. The real question is, “What will this new game be?” It sounds like Bungie wants a sweet piece of that esports pie, with slices claimed by Valorant and CSGO. Bungie really made its mark in the world of esports in the early days with the Halo franchise. What’s in store for us?
A Bungie job listening is teasing a new franchise, and it will reportedly have competitive PVP playlists within it. This job listing is “Incubation Multiplayer Systems Designer.” The job overview offers this:
“Are you on a mission to create games that bond players together into deeply invested communities? Do you spend your time deconstructing the latest PvP games to understand how they work? Do you analyze how teamplay dynamics are affected by everything from moment-to-moment abilities to high-level macro objectives? Are you excited to design game systems that allow for interesting strategic decisions, multiple vectors of player learning, and the depth to support hundreds of hours of gameplay?”
“The ideal candidate is skilled at PVP, keeps up with what’s hot, and can easily break down a map to find out what the most opportune strategy will be there. Therefore, they could use this to make the best PVP maps possible. A strong understanding of map design is also key here. This person will be a part of “competitive multiplayer game mechanics which provide strategic depth and opportunities for counterplay.”
We don’t know much about this yet, but it very much sounds like Bungie is looking to get back into esports. Not since Halo Reach has Bungie had a real presence in esports, so this new game has many fans getting pretty excited. This writer was really surprised that Destiny didn’t lean into PVP, as it does have some intense competitive maps. That was back in the beginning, at least. The focus is more on PVE now, and that’s fine.
It just felt like a game that could have been fun in esports. Don’t expect this anytime soon, though. It’s being said that this new IP won’t drop until at least after 2024. This is likely due to the upcoming Destiny content. The development of this IP hasn’t begun yet, but we’re curious what will come. Perhaps they will branch away from the Sci-Fi/Future War content they’re known for – but if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. We’ll be keeping our eyes on this as it develops.
