Can You Mine Crypto With Your PS5?

Crypto mining is a costly venture involving much work and sporadic rewards. The greatest motivation of miners is that they get rewarded using cryptocurrency tokens. To mine cryptocurrency requires a lot of time and the right equipment. Mining equipment is not easy to come across, and if you would get a way to mine using other ways, you would gladly take it. This is why there has been a major frenzy in the crypto markets on whether the latest Sony console, the PS5, has the required technology for mining crypto.

Many new features intended to distinguish the PS5 from its forerunners were hinted at in the months before its introduction. The new DualSense joystick, which Sony introduced to replace the old DualShock controllers, used capacitive sensors and provided a tactile experience. There were rumors that the PS5 might mine Ethereum since its specs were similar to those of a mining rig. After the rumors, many people have planned to turn their consoles into mining equipment for coins such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, solana, etc. But do these rumors hold any weight? Can you mine crypto using your PS5 console? A recent frenzy about some Chinese hackers mining using PS5 consoles ignited a debate concerning the probability of the same. However, the screenshot uploaded by the Chinese hackers revealed that the mining was nothing but a scam. If the frenzy goes on, sooner or later we might be able to see mining rigs made of PS5 consoles.

Currently, the main problem in the gaming community is the shortage of PS5 consoles which makes the available ones to be sold at a high price. If the consoles are proven to have the system required for mining, gamers will be forced into paying even more to access their favorite games.

Refurbished PS5 Chips in AMD’s Crypto Mining Hardware

ASRock is promoting a new AMD-based cryptocurrency mining rig. However, instead of using the most powerful graphics processors, it looks to be built using defective PS5 CPUs. It has been revealed that the servers, which cost about $14,800, are equipped with twelve AMD BC-250 APUs. The equipment has been downgraded to a “barebones” extraction rig on the Slovenian website Bolha. This website states that it is a “quality computer for bitcoin mining projects with a promise produced by a known corporation ASRock.” The description does not provide processor details, but the computer has PCIe APUs, 16GB of RAM, and two 1,200W power supplies.

The Ethereum mining speed of ASRock’s hardware is said to be 610 MHps. An unlocked Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 graphics processing unit (GPU) can achieve 135 MHps at a power draw of 300W. You would need approximately five high-end GPUs to get the same performance as the ASRock server. Higher demand from cryptocurrency miners is putting a strain on GPU supplies, but a partnership between AMD and ASRock might entice miners away from high-end gaming computers. Crypto farms may still employ cards with open hash rates, such as the upcoming Intel Arc Alchemist, because of the decreasing prices of Nvidia and AMD Radeon graphics cards.

Setups for Mining Cryptocurrency with PS5 Chips

The PS5’s accelerated processing unit (CPU and GPU) may be the most powerful yet seen in a home video game console. The device must satisfy Sony’s strict standards to be considered a microprocessor. Those who don’t pass are allegedly sold to cryptocurrency miners. Twelve reconditioned PlayStation 5 chips were found in ASRock crypto mining hardware, and they all experienced the same fate.

What Does This Ultimately Mean

With this information you could be asking yourself, does it mean that one has to join a few PS5s and they will be good to start crypto mining? You might possess technical know-how of going around the whole thing and start coin mining. There are hackers in China that have already said that they can mine bitcoin using the PS5 console system. As it is, there is no sure way of confirming that these allegations might be true. The only thing that stands is that there have been no known hacks of the PlayStation 5 system recently. That’s the only catch for people who want to flash it with their software, such as bitcoin mining software. However, hackers have previously claimed they are “close” to overcoming the console’s security.
