In a rare turn of events, Atari has announced Centipede: Recharged, a re-imagining of the original arcade classic–and a game from Atari that might turn out to be a decent game when it releases next month. Shocking, I know, but bear with me on this one, as it does happen once in a while. At least it’s not a casino, right?
Centipede: Recharged has the same rules as Centipede had in 1981: “shoot the centipedes as they descend the playing field, and contend around the shot-blocking and path-altering mushrooms they leave behind.” New to the 40th anniversary version are power-ups that are dropped by spiders. These can range from explosive bullets, spread shots, and a railgun.
“We’re so excited to bring these classic, genre-defining games to modern consoles,” said Wade Rosen, the CEO of Atari. “Our goal is to create faithful adaptations that ooze with nostalgia and style, and we’re looking forward to providing that to the old school fans that loved Centipede as kids, and a new generation of players who appreciate high-quality arcade action and 80’s aesthetic.”
Players will be able to go for the highest score in Arcade mode or play in couch co-op if you’re into that kind of thing. There’s more than two dozen challenges that will be available to test your bug-shooting skills. These challenges will also test how you can handle the new powerups, with some exclusive to the poor souls that bought an Atari VCS. For other players there will be 15 trophies, including a Platinum trophy on the PlayStation 4 and 5.
Speaking of new consoles, on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X you’ll have 4K support and at 120 FPS, along with up to 240 HZ on PC as well so you can really get your groove on.
What is the Centipede: Recharged release date?
Centipede: Recharged releases Wednesday, Sept. 29 on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games Store on Windows PC for $9.99. It’s also coming to the Atari VCS, and for those who own the console, you’ll get exclusive content and get to use your shiny new Atari Wireless Classic Joystick.
