Everything we know about Civilization 7 (VII), including leaks, its possible release date, what to expect in terms of gameplay, and more.
Published on October 11th, 2022
Can you believe that Sid Meier’s Civilization 6, the turn-based 4X strategy game developed by Firaxis, is already six years old? Instead of throwing a party with Peppa Pig blasting in the background, fans might wonder when Civilization 7 (VII) will finally get released.
Curious? Sure you are…so this article explains everything we know so far about Civilization 7, including a look at its potential release date window, leaks, news, and what we can expect from its gameplay.
Civilization 7 Release Date
At the time of writing, Firaxis has not revealed an official release date or even a release date window for Civilization 7.
Looking at it from a historical perspective for mainline entries, we can see that the release of Civilization 7 is getting to the “overdue” point.
Game Title | Release Date |
Civilization | September 1991 |
Civilization 2 | February 1996 |
Civilization 3 | October 2001 |
Civilization 4 | June 2006 |
Civilization 5 | November 2010 |
Civilization 6 | October 2016 |
As you can see, there’s roughly a five to a six-year gap between releases of mainline Civilization titles. It’s been six years since the latest entry, Civilization 6, was released.
Since we don’t even have a Civilization 7 official reveal, our guestimate is that the game won’t release for a few years, likely sometime in 2024. It is also important to note that, very likely, we won’t hear any news about the game until after the release of Marvel’s Midnight Suns on 2nd December 2022.
Civilization 7 Leaks & News
There has been no official announcement about Civilization 7 yet, and no credible leaks.
However, we know that developer Firaxis has something cooking, and it is likely not XCOM 3.
In November 2021, Firaxis put out some job applications, including one for a Narrative Lead to work on their next AAA strategy game. The reason we think this is Civilization 7 and not XCOM 3 is simple; the Narrative Lead role requires “knowledge and passion for world history,” which points a finger directly at a Civilization title.
While it is likely that the game has been in development for at least a year, Civilization fans haven’t been left entirely unappeased.
The developer has released two full expansions for Civilization 6 and the New Frontier Pass, so the content does keep flowing.
Civilization 7 Gameplay & Speculation
It is a certainty that Civilization 7 will be a turn-based 4X strategy title, as all previous entries into the franchise. Players will once again be able to conquer the world, one step at a time, and we do expect new leaders and some revamped systems in Civilization 7.
While no official Civilization 7 gameplay has been released just yet, YouTuber JumboPixel, who focuses primarily on 4X strategy games, has released a couple of videos we found interesting, one about the game’s possible release date being earlier than expected and one looking at Firaxis’s showing at Game Developers Conference 2022, and the future of the franchise.
