Classic FPS Rise of the Triad Remaster Gets Launch Window

The upcoming remaster of Rise of the Triad is now said to be coming out in early 2023 for Switch, PC, and last-gen consoles. Since the original game was released in 1995, with the shareware version coming a year before, it’s become one of the best Doom clones of all time. It’s quite the cult release, so no doubt many gamers are looking forward to the re-release.

The Rise of the Triad remaster was announced in 2020 and was said to be getting launched in 2021. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but now there is at least a better idea of when players can get hold of it. The project is being worked on by Apogee Software, who developed the original release. A recent trailer gives some insight into what fans can expect next year, including 4K resolution, “ludicrous” fps, a new map, and remastered cutscenes.

The remaster has been given the subtitle “Ludicrous Edition.” As well as being helmed by Apogee Software, it’s also being worked on by Nightdive Studios, who many will know for their previous work on remastering classics. Nightdive is also developing the remake of System Shock, so the team is no stranger to reviving beloved retro titles. The game is also being published by New Blood Interactive, a studio that is responsible for bringing the world retro-style indie titles like Gloomwood and Ultrakill. As such, it seems like Rise of the Triad is in safe hands.

The gaming world is currently in a golden age of remakes and remasters, with some older titles being given a new lick of paint to make them feel more modern, while others such as Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy have been rebuilt from the ground up. There are also the official remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 which are due out soon, so there’s a lot to look forward to for those who want to relive some of their favorite classics.

As for the original Rise of the Triad, it didn’t quite get the recognition that Doom and Quake got, which are considered among the most innovative FPS games ever, but it has enjoyed cult status and made an impact on the genre back in the 90s. At least now, those who remember the original can play an upgraded version, and those who didn’t can experience it for the first time.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is coming early 2023 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
