Crystal Dynamics Is Asking Legacy Of Kain Fans If They Want A Reboot, A Remake, Or A New Game

The classic PS1 series could possibly be revived if there’s enough interest.

Crystal Dynamics is trying to gauge interest in a potential revival of the Legacy of Kain series as it opens up a ‘Legacy of Kain franchise survey’ to participants. While it’s been nearly two decades since the last entry, the series still inspires cultish devotion among those who played them.

First launching on the PS1 in 1996 with the title Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, there were five games in the series, ending with 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance which launched on PS2 and Xbox. Now it seems Crystal Dynamics is wondering if the series could be revived going by the survey’s questions, although the exact nature of the revival could be open-ended, and that’s if Crystal Dynamics even decides to bring it back.

The survey questions include what platforms the participant uses, and if they have played any of the games in the series, or have watched someone doing so. It also asks what reaction the responder would have to the announcement of a game featuring vampires (regardless if it’s a Legacy of Kain game).

One of the more intriguing questions asks the participant to choose five options for “what, in your opinion, are the core features of an enjoyable vampire game”. Characteristics such as ‘moral ambiguity’, ‘traversal’, ‘vampire mythology’, ‘puzzles’, ‘blood feeding’, ‘combat’, shape shifting’, ‘nocturnal living’ are then listed among 19 options.

The nature of the revival is also up for discussion. Crystal Dynamics’s survey has participants ranking, in order of preference, if a new game should be a remaster, a remake (“rebuild one of the original games from the ground up”), a reboot of the series, or a sequel to the original games. Then there’s the decision of what kind of game the potential new title would be: single player or multiplayer, and what genres it could be.

Since Crystal Dynamics became a part of Embracer Group, after being sold off by Square Enix, it’s known that the developer has been showing more interest in the IP it has tucked in its back pocket. The Legacy of Kain series is one such franchise. While this survey is by no means indicative of the developer’s future plans for the series, players can express their by answering the survey’s questions here.
