We always get excited when we see a game running ‘Very Positive’ Steam reviews coming to Xbox. That excitement rises even more when it is known that same game is making the most of Game Pass. It’s with that which we ask a simple question: dare you go and run the gauntlet of Phantom Abyss on Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass?
Available today on Xbox Series X|S as a Game Preview title, either for a cash outlay or as you work the Game Pass route, Phantom Abyss continues to run the Early Access routes of Steam to deliver a new, hugely exciting, asynchronous multiplayer game to the Xbox world.
It throws you into an ever-changing, procedurally-generated temple as you are tasked with a single mission – to claim the prize of the temple. The problem is, many have tried, and many have failed and so you’ll need to make the most of their lost souls in order to try and find success. There’s a reason they failed though.
Running three routes of play – an Adventure Mode, that of Classic Mode and an intense Daily Mode – Phantom Abyss promises to provide a world full of traps, of obstacles, of branching pathways and of relentless guardians. You’ll need to overcome each and every one of those should you wish to find any of that lost treasure.
You should be ready for failure in Phantom Abyss, but also be of the knowledge that with each dead end comes new opportunity; whips carrying the most powerful of blessings… or curses.
Key game features include:
- Asynchronous Multiplayer – Explore the perilous halls and colossal rooms of each temple alongside the phantoms of fallen players that came before you. Use their successes and failures to your advantage to progress deeper than they ever could have hoped.
- Unlock More Treacherous Floors – Recover keys from chests to unlock deeper, deadlier sections of the temple that house more coveted relics. The more difficult a relic is to obtain, the greater the reward – the final Legendary Relic of a temple allows you to claim the whole temple so that it’s gone forever.
- Blessings from the Gods – As adventurers venture further into a temple, offerings of collected treasures can be made at altars to gain a new blessing for the rest of the run. Collect as much treasure as you can to please the gods and gain a double jump, glide jump, extended slide, damage protection, and more!
- Unlockable Whips – Unlock new whips with success and choose from your collection before venturing into your next run. Each whips carries a minor blessing but also a curse that may complicate your attempt at riches and gl
With the Game Preview / Early Access tag in hand, you should be aware that Phantom Abyss is far from the finished article. For that reason we won’t be reviewing just yet, instead casting our eye over the continued developmental progress.
If you wish to help swing Phantom Abyss this way or that, go and grab a copy of the game from the Xbox Store. It’s on Steam too.
Game Description:
This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time or release as a final product. Purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game. Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of death overwhelm them. Be warned, you only get one attempt at each temple and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again… The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. Once the legendary relic at the bottom of each temple is found, the temple goes away forever and becomes the priceless trophy of the skilled adventurer.
