Dark Souls 3 PC Servers Have Crashed

The Dark Souls III PC servers crashed again just weeks after developer FromSoftware brought it back online after seven months of downtime.

FromSoftwares delivered the news in a Tweet to the official Dark Souls Twitter account, revealing the issue had yet to be determined. “At this time, there is a confirmed issue with DARK SOULS III online play via the Steam platform,” the post read. “We are investigating the source of the problem and will inform you as soon as more details become available. Thank you for your patience.”

The servers for Dark Souls III‘s PC version went down in January, along with those for older editions of the series, after a user found a way to use Remote Code Execution. This opened up the servers to hackers, who could install malicious malware and steal sensitive information from a player’s computer, including IP addresses, login credentials and banking info. FromSoftware discovered a similar breach in Elden Ring just prior to the title’s launch, but it patched it up before it launched.

FromSoftware declared in May that it was finally working on a solution for the downed system, though it gave no indicators to fans for when the work might be completed. “We are currently in the process of restoring the online servers for the Dark Souls series on PC,” the developer said. “We plan to restore online service for each game progressively, bringing back servers for Dark Souls 3 once we complete the necessary work to correct the problem.”

Dark Souls III‘s servers only returned in late August, while those for the first and second games in the series remained down. Despite the shadow hovering over the game, players remained passionate about the series. Some even held the Return to Lothric fan event in June on its available Xbox and PlayStation platforms while also pleading with FromSoftware to return the online functionality to PC gamers.

In the meantime, FromSoftware claims its latest game is nearly complete, though it offered no details on the project. Some rumors, however, indicated it might be a new entry in the Armored Core series, which hasn’t seen a game since 2013’s Verdict Day. There’s also talk that Elden Ring might receive a DLC in the near future, with a leak from the Bandai Namco hack indicating it might be titled Barbarians of the Badlands.

Dark Souls 3 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, though online functionality is currently only available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
