Update:
Just as expected, Deathloop will come to Xbox Series X/S (but not Xbox One) this month, with Microsoft announcing the date of Tuesday, September 20.
The game won’t be a straight port of the PlayStation 5 original though, as it will add a new energy based weapon, a new projectile ability called Fugue that confuses enemies, and four new upgrade options for Julianna’s Masquerade ability.
There’ll also be a new ‘Paint-Bomber’ enemy, which basically sound like suicide bombers, and cross-platforming matchmaking.
What’s most interesting though is the promise of an extended ending. Despite an interesting set-up the game’s storytelling was surprisingly weak, with an especially abrupt and unsatisfying ending – so if that can be addressed it’ll be a very welcome change.
All these extras will also be available as free DLC for the PlayStation 5 and PC versions, in what Bethesda are calling the Goldenloop update.
Original story:
Exactly a year after Deathloop’s release, an advert for the game has appeared on Xbox, heralding its inevitable launch for the platform.
Even though Microsoft bought Bethesda in 2020, last year’s Deathloop never launched for Xbox consoles and was exclusive to PlayStation 5 and PC.
This was because Sony already had an exclusivity deal in place, one that would last until September 14, 2022. Although there’s yet to be a formal announcement, it looks like the game is ready to release on Xbox very soon.
An advertisement for Deathloop has been spotted on the Xbox store, but it doesn’t tell us exactly when the game will be available.
It’s also unclear if Deathloop will release for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Considering Deathloop never released for the PlayStation 4, it may be safe to assume that it will skip the last gen Xbox One as well.
As for when Microsoft and/or Bethesda will confirm this, it’s suspected that it’s being saved for September 20, since that’s the day Deathloop will be added to PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.
It’s likely it will release for Xbox that same day and Microsoft will also add the game to its own Game Pass service, as it’s done with other Bethesda games.
Sony also signed an exclusivity deal with Bethesda for Ghostwire: Tokyo, which is expected to work in the same way when it comes to Xbox.
Since that game only released earlier this year, you shouldn’t expect an Xbox port until after March 21, 2023.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, Deathloop is a first person shooter about a man trapped in a time loop. The only way to break it is to kill seven targets within one loop.
Despite the premise, there’s no real time limit and while the gunplay and powers are entertaining, we found the whole experience a little too easy and straightforward.
Deathloop is currently available for PlayStation 5 and PC.
