Disney+ has quickly grown to become one of the biggest streaming services available. Despite this, those with a PlayStation have until now been limited to watching films and TV shows at 1080p – even though many of them were filmed in 4K. Nearly two years on from the system’s launch, a PS5-native Disney+ app is now available.
As reported by The Verge, Disney+ has now released a new PS5-native app, allowing those with the latest generation console to play the service’s library of films and TV shows at up to 4K HDR. Of course, you could always access Disney+ on PS5, but as the app was intended for PS4, output was limited to just 1080p.
Much of Disney+’s library is available to stream in 4K and so it is exciting to see PlayStation users finally being able to do so. Speaking on this new app, Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of product and design for Disney streaming said:
“A key part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we’re excited to enhance both Disney Plus and Star Plus for PlayStation 5 users. The ability to support 4K HDR video streaming on the platform will also improve the viewing experience for fans.”
The Disney+ app on PS5 should always have had an option to stream at 4K. In fact, the PS4 Pro is capable of streaming other video services in 4K, and so the PS4 app being limited to just 1080p was always questionable. Still, it’s better late than never.
