There’s been a lot of back and forth recently between Xbox and PlayStation over the future of Call of Duty. Microsoft feels that it’s laid out a generous plan for the next few years of CoD if the Activision deal goes through, while Sony doesn’t feel the same way. Now, EA has had something to say on the matter; they believe the Battlefield series could benefit from all of this.
Speaking on a video conference last week (via journalist Stephen Totilo), EA CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about the future of its own FPS series, Battlefield. In short, Wilson thinks Battlefield could stand to benefit from Call of Duty going exclusive:
“And in a world where there are questions as to the future of Call of Duty and what platforms that might be on and might not be on, being platform-agnostic and completely cross-platform with Battlefield I think is a tremendous opportunity.”
EA does have a point! Battlefield would be one of the biggest FPS franchises on PlayStation if Call of Duty ended up Xbox exclusive, although Microsoft has told Sony there’s no reason to be worried about the prospect of exclusivity.
Even if it did happen, Battlefield would still need to make significant strides itself to match up to CoD as well. Developer DICE has struggled to add content to Battlefield 2042 since the game’s rough 2021 launch, although the future of the franchise looks markedly different as Respawn founder Vince Zampella takes control of Battlefield.
