It’s worth reiterating that both Earth Defense Force 2017 and the Earth Defense Force 2 Switch ports are based on the PS Vita versions, which themselves are remakes of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 originals, respectively and have familiar specs to the PS Vita versions.
The most recent game to be released in the series is Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, which we reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed. The next mainline game in the series, Earth Defense Force 6, has no release date but is supposed to launch “end of 2021” at the earliest, in Japan.
