The Tomb Raider trilogy is the final Epic Games free game for December 2021 and here is a ranking of the three instalments.
December has been an incredible month for the PC community thanks to winter sales as well as the EGS promotion. This promotion has given players an assortment of incredible titles for the cost of nothing such as Loop Hero, Pathfinder, Prey, Control, and Salt and Sanctuary.
While it’s sad that Christmas is over, the good news is that it has ended with the biggest package yet.
- JANUARY: All January 2022 video game releases for console and PC
How to get Tomb Raider trilogy for free from Epic Games
You can only get the Tomb Raider trilogy for free from the Epic Games store until 08:00 PT, 11:00 ET, and 16:00 GMT on January 6th.
Once the above date and hours pass, you will no longer be able to add the game to your library for the cost of nothing as it will be replaced by God’s Will Fall. It would be a massive shame to miss out as it’s three great adventures and stories in one package.
Provided you claim the trilogy while it’s available for free, you will want to start from the very beginning to experience the overarching narrative as a whole. However, despite needing to play all three games, they are fairly different and can be separated in regard to which is the best.
Tomb Raider trilogy ranked
Below is our ranking for the Tomb Raider modern trilogy games from worst to best:
3. Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise of the Tomb Raider is a good game, but we believe it’s the worst of the trilogy because its story is fairly mediocre. Although the reboot is very good, we’re not fans of Lara Croft’s portrayal compared to Legend, Anniversary, Underworld, and the PS1 games. This is because she’s very boring and lacks a larger-than-life personality as Rise turns her from a witty and unforgettable adrenaline junkie into a plain and simple do-gooder.
In addition to a boring Lara Croft, the story is also sleep-inducing as the villain(s) are lame and it throws you into a war impossible to care about. The game’s monsters are also very tame compared to its 2013 predecessor, and the final act feels like an imitation of Uncharted 2.
However, despite a boring story, protagonist, and characters, the gameplay is much improved. Lara still doesn’t have her iconic dual pistols, but the gameplay feels much smoother and there’s more survival elements as well as puzzles to solve via caves.
2. Tomb Raider (2013)
The Tomb Raider reboot was one of the best games of the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. Although it took us away from the motorcycles, one-liners, and big bosom, it gave us a noob Lara Croft that was very vulnerable and desperate. It should have resulted in her becoming the iconic dual-wielding badass that everyone still loves from yesteryear, but it’s impossible to blame this game for the failure of the sequels.
While the rest of Lara’s shipmates are bog-standard and not very interesting, Lara is at least on her own most of the time. And this results in plenty of exhilarating action set pieces where you scour the land and fight onslaughts of enemies with just your trusty bow and arrow.
The villain is decent and the story of the island is quite interesting. But, what’s most memorable about the game is how it leans into horror. It’s not scary and it won’t give you nightmares, but it’s easily the most brutal Tomb Raider game of all time as it has the most blood and gore. Because of this, it also has the most iconic image of the trilogy which is Lara emerging from a bath of blood in a visual homage to The Descent.
Oh, and there was also a multiplayer mode to enjoy for a couple of hours before forgetting. With that said, this is easily the worst aspect of the game as it makes the title near impossible to platinum all these years later.
1. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best of the trilogy because it’s the one that most feels like a classic Tomb Raider game. Lara Croft’s still whiny and nowhere near as fun or memorable as she used to be, and Eidos Montreal unforgivably robbed us snu snu fetishists of a slightly toned and beefier Lara by toning down her muscle mass. But, despite all of this, she’s at least put into a jungle environment full of puzzles to solve.
There are more optional puzzles in the game than either the reboot or Rise, and there’s also more puzzles that need to be solved to actually progress through the story. In addition, the game allows you to make puzzles harder by letting you turn off hints so Lara Croft shuts her yap and doesn’t spoil the fun.
Away from puzzles, there’s also more exploration and breaks between the bombastic combat. And, when it does turn into Uncharted, it at least becomes the best Rambo video game of all time.
Its story – again – isn’t very good and the villain – again – is very lame and forgettable. But, despite all of this, the gameplay, open playground, collectibles, and sheer amount of puzzles is fantastic. And it’s also impossible to not gush about the underwater sections which are intense and panic-inducing because of tight spaces, piranhas, and Lara’s unfortunate lack of gills.
