Even When Put Together, PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S Fall Prey to Nintendo Switch’s Sales Dominance

When it comes to console gaming in 2022, fans face a hard time choosing between the three most popular and capable devices, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. While Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5 represent next-generation hardware, Nintendo Switch shines with respect to portability and exclusive video game collection.

A recent statistic has hailed Nintendo Switch as the winner in terms of sales numbers considering a year-on-year comparison. The statistic had stated numbers for popular Xbox, Nintendo and PS consoles, including Xbox One, 3DS, and PlayStation 4. Nintendo Switch dominated the year-to-date total sales numbers, with more units sold than PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S combined.

Nintendo Switch tops the yearly total sales chart

VGChartz, a notable financial chart maker, revealed the year-to-date sales numbers of the consoles through the same time period (January 8 to June 18, 2022). While Xbox Series X|S sold 3,554,180 units and PlayStation 5 sold 3,481,886 units, Nintendo Switch managed to sell 7,374,928 times.

Doing the inevitable math, Switch has sold 738,862 more units than PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles combined in the last six months!

It’s an incredible feat for Nintendo, considering that Switch is one of the oldest releases on the list. Nintendo Switch’s hardware could use some makeover for 2022’s industry trend. However, its hand-held portability and huge library stand out in a crowd of possibilities.

Then again, Xbox Series X|S consoles have seen a noticeable growth in year-to-date sales numbers. Between January 9 and June 19 in 2021, Xbox Series X|S had sold 2,583,187 times. Compared to the same time period from this year, the next-gen console duo has enjoyed a 37.6% up in sales.

On the other hand, Switch and PlayStation 5 have seen a decrease in sales compared to last year’s numbers. While Switch has suffered a dip of 25.7% in sales, PlayStation 5 has had to endure a 28.9% decrease in sales. You can find the detailed comparison in year-to-date sales by VGChartz here.

Nintendo just hosted a much-anticipated Direct event

As Switch dominates the console industry in sales, Nintendo strives to keep its loyal fan base intact. The latest Direct Mini happened yesterday, as leaks suggested, and showcased 20+ titles. Some of them were already known to fans, like Sonic Frontiers and Minecraft Legends, but the exclusive looks were pretty impressive!

In total, Nintendo has sold more than 107 million units of the console since its release. However, fans definitely want Switch’s successor, a portable hand-held console featuring at least some next-gen capabilities. After all, an OLED screen and 1080p support aren’t enough for video games anymore!
