Fable developer denies rumours that game is in trouble

Worried about Fable being downsized? Don’t be, it’s meant to happen (pic: Microsoft)

Rumours that Fable has being reduced in scope has caught the attention of the game’s own senior producer, who denies the suggestion.

Ever since its announcement in 2020, there has been no news regarding the big Fable reboot. Aside from a brief cinematic teaser, all we know about it is that Playground Games (the Forza Horizon studio) is making it and it could release exclusively for the Xbox Series X/S (so no Xbox One version).

A complete lack of information can make fans nervous and lead to assumptions that development is troubled, especially as news of the game was leaked several years before it was officially announced. One new rumour has suggested that the development team is having problems with the graphics engine and has had to reduce the scope of the game.

Surprisingly, Fable’s own senior producer, Amie Loake, has come out to directly address the rumour and assure worried fans that everything is going fine.

While she doesn’t deny that the original scope of the game has changed, she explains that scoping is a natural part of the development process. If anything, this will help prevent any delays and avoid forcing the team through a crunch period.

‘I wanted to clear something up about scoping; it is a normal, necessary and healthy part of game development. I can guarantee that every single AAA game you’ve ever played will have gone through scoping regularly during development,’ she writes on Twitter.

Loake has only been with Playground Games since March of this year, but she definitely knows what she’s talking about.

Aside from having at least 10 years of experience working in the industry, she used to be part of Lionhead Studios, the original company that made the Fable games. It was acquired by Microsoft in 2006 but wound up being shut down 10 years later.

As for the rumour itself, it originates from the Xbox News Cast, where the founder of website GameOnDaily, only known as Gaz, claimed to have heard that Playground Games is struggling to retrofit Fable’s mechanics into the ForzaTech engine (the same engine used for Forza Horizon).

He did say at the time that games always get scaled down and are condensed, and that this doesn’t necessarily mean Fable will be a smaller game as a result.

From the sound of things, those who parroted the rumour didn’t include this part, prompting Gaz to reiterate his statements on Twitter and add ‘If there’s any team out there that can deliver an epic Fable it’s Playground Games.’
