Fancy going deep into the chills of the finest Japense tales? Ikai is a first person psychological horror experience that will take you deeper than you could ever imagine.
Available today on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC, Ikai from PM Studios and Endflame will invite you into the darkest of nightmares as the most hardened Japanese tales come to life.
A game in which you’ll be left to fend off the most dangerous of demons with just mystical kanji (a style of Japanese writing for those wondering), Ikai looks to explore a whole new style of horror experience, as you go head-to-head with some serious threats.
Honestly, we’re not sure how we feel about going into a horror experience with nothing but the written word to hand, but Ikai won’t let you deal any damage with guns or swords, instead left to experience fear, take in exploration and work your way through puzzles in the most strange of ways.
We’re currently working on a review of Ikai and will let you know how it plays out on Xbox Series X|S in the days ahead, but the key features of the game, those that sell it, are as follows…
- FEAR: Experience the horror in first-person by the hand of Japanese spirits, monsters, and yokai.
- EXPLORATION: Wander around a feudal Shinto shrine and explore to unveil the story behind Naoko, the main character.
- DRAWING: Concentrate on drawing protective seals over the strange sounds and events happening around you.
- PUZZLES: Pit your wits against challenges that will try to stop you
- STEALTH & RUN: Be silent, do not disturb the evil… Or just run, run away from it all, if you can.
You can grab the download of Ikai that you need from today from the usual digital stores. For Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players, it’s the Xbox Store that will sort matters. You’ll also find Ikai kicking around, bringing the thrills and chills on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC.
Game Description:
Ikai is a first-person psychological horror game drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore. Live the horror by the hand of its defining yokais and submerge into the superstitions of the past driven by a unique story and exploration. Ikai embodies the spirit of the classical psychological horror genre with a defenceless main character incapable of attacking the evil creatures. However, it explores a new sense of horror by making the player face the threats directly neither fleeing nor attacking. Every mechanic of the game is meant to raise this relatable feeling of helplessness and create a tense atmosphere. The slow, precise and natural movements as a way of interaction resemble real life’s to foster immersion in the uncanny world of Ikai.
