FISU Officials make final visit in preparation for games | News, Sports, Jobs

LAKE PLACID — An International group of officials are currently in Lake Placid for a final check of venues and operations before the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games, set for Jan. 12-22. The officials will check over the venues through Monday, Oct. 24.

Eight International University Sports Federation officials are in Lake Placid and the surrounding Adirondack communities to inspect and approve details at each of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games’ venues.

The FISU visit comes on the heels of September’s Head of Delegations meetings, where international delegates received a firsthand look at venues after the coronavirus pandemic limited travel and access to competition sites.

FISU officials will also have an opportunity to experience women’s and men’s collegiate ice hockey. They’ll watch women’s ice hockey games at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall and SUNY Canton’s Roos House and men’s ice hockey at the Cheel Arena on Clarkson University’s campus.

The venues will host the preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments during the 2023 Games. The medal games will be held at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.

The trip will allow FISU officials to take a final look at other elements of the competition like security, medical — including COVID-related policies and protection guidelines — transportation and ceremonies. Representatives from the U.S. Antidoping Agency will also be touring venues.

FISU operations staff are expected to begin arriving in Lake Placid in late December to provide support to the Lake Placid Organizing Committee for the duration of the Games.
