Week 3 of the high school football season features five games for our local-area teams. Four are conference battles.
The Courier-Times will be publishing the first football statistics package of the season next Friday with parameters from each teams’ first three weeks of games.
Pendleton Heights (1-1, 0-0 HHC) at New Castle (1-1, 0-0 HHC) 7 p.m.
The Arabians lost at Lebanon 26-12 in Week 1 but defeated Anderson 42-6 at home last Friday.
The Trojans have played two close games thus far and are even in takeaways with their first two opponents. Coach Kyle York stated that his team lacked consistency in play after last week’s loss to Triton Central.
Pendleton has won the past four games in the series between the two teams, the last two by very close margins.
Union City at (0-2, 0-1 TEC) at Hagerstown (1-1, 1-1 TEC) 7 p.m.
The Indians have played really tough opponents the first two weeks of the season, losing to Class A No. 7 Tri 68-12 and Class A No. 5 Monroe Central 38-0.
The Tigers are even-steven with a 50-26 win at Knightstown followed by a 47-7 loss at Centerville. This is Hagerstown’s home opener.
Union City has won the past two games in this series after the Tigers won the previous six.
Knightstown (0-2, 0-2 TEC) at Union County (1-1, 1-1 TEC) 7 p.m.
The Panthers took it on the chin at home against Hagerstown 50-26 and Winchester 35-20 the first two weeks of the season, and hopes to right the ship in Liberty.
The Patriots’ first two games haven’t been close – a 48-9 loss to Northeastern followed by a 41-6 victory over Cambridge City Lincoln.
Union County won the game between the two teams last season after Knightstown won the previous three.
Tri (2-0, 2-0 TEC) at Cambridge City Lincoln (0-2, 0-2 TEC) 7 p.m.
On paper, this contest appears to be a mismatch. The Class A No. 7 Titans have outscored their opponents 115-19 in two games while the Golden Eagles have been outscored 113-6. But it is a game between nearby rivals, so that could play some part in the outcome.
These two teams did not play each other the past two seasons because Lincoln didn’t have enough players in 2021 and because of COVID in 2020, so Tri instead played South Putnam in 2021 (a 29-6 loss) and Adams Central in 2020 (a 41-0 defeat).
Tri Coach Andrew Totheroh never has lost to the Golden Eagles, going 4-0 against them from 2016-19.
Lapel (1-1) at Shenandoah (1-1) 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs lost to visiting Hamilton heights 34-7 in Week one before winning at Frankton 21-7 last Friday.
The Raiders have looked pretty good during the first two weeks of the season, a 56-0 win at Elwood followed by a 52-33 loss to Class 2A No. 7 Heritage Christian last Friday in a contest that was closer than the score indicates.
This is a pretty good rivalry game. Lapel has won the past two contests between the two schools. Shenandoah hopes to pick up a victory before opening the Mid-Eastern Conference season with a game at Class A No. 8 North Decatur next Friday.
