The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) has moved to the city of Malmö in Sweden for the Finals Week of LEC Summer 2022. The top three teams in Europe – G2 Esports, Rogue (RGE), and Fnatic (FNC) – will look to take home the trophy and head into Worlds 2022 with an LEC title. Ahead of the semifinals today, the league is hosting an expo on 10th and 11th September for the fans at the MalmöMässan Exhibition & Congress Center. G2 Esports brought a truck to the LEC Xpo, a reference to all the T1 and truck jokes. The community refers to the jokes as “the truck meta.”
G2 Esports’ truck at LEC Xpo
G2 Esports, the reigning LEC Spring 2022 champions, has already locked in its place in the grand finals on 11th September. The team will go up against the winner of the Rogue vs Fnatic match today in the grand final best-of-five (BO5) series. The organization is notoriously known in the community for its sense of humor. In the same vein, G2 Esports has brought in a big truck to Malmö with a humongous display screen.
G2 Esports , “COME CHECK OUT OUR TRUCK AT THE #LEC XPO.” The display screen shows a photograph of G2 Esports CEO Carlos “Ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago napping with a handwritten sign that reads, “Wake me up when G2 plays.”
The truck jokes have been quite rampant in the League of Legends esports community and it started with T1 fans hiring a truck to display messages about the team. In 2020, fans of T1 fundraised a truck to carry messages like “No future for a team that shuts out devoted fans” and “Don’t hide behind the backs of the players. T1 top management should take responsibility.” The truck drove around important avenues of downtown Seoul, including SK Telecom’s HQ and Gangnam.
Likewise, during the 2022 Summer split in the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK), a group of T1 fans dispatched a truck to LoL Park, before the T1 vs Hanwha Life series on 4th August, lashing out at T1 coaches Choi “Polt” Seong-hun (now general manager) and Kim “moment” Ji-hwan.
Every time T1 or any other team performed poorly in the games, the fans joked about “sending trucks” or “the truckening” on Twitch and other social media sites.
Gen.G Arnold also joked about the “trucks”
Gen.G proved it is currently the strongest team in Korea by winning the LCK Summer trophy and by qualifying for Worlds 2022 as the number one seed. It also took down the reigning Spring champions T1. Joining in on the jokes about the “trucks,” Gen.G’s CEO Arnold Hur posted a photograph on 8th September on Twitter where he posed in front of a Gen.G food truck.
Hardcore fans of League of Legends have taken well to the “truck meta” and have been plaguing their “favorite” teams by sending out trucks to get across their anger and thoughts. Famous Korean team Damwon Kia was also a victim of the truck meta as its fans demanded the resignation of Head Coach Yang “Daeny” Dae-in.
The truck meta has become quite a sensation and has become material for memes in the west despite the soaring tension in Korea. Come Worlds 2022, the community will likely see more memorable truck-related jokes.
