Gaming News #146 – Call of Duty Goes WWII Again, Nvidia Tech in the New Switch, Ghost of Tsushima Movie

The past week featured a healthy mix of news ranging from news about upcoming games, movies based on games, hardware, and even some massive acquisition reports. Most notably, Microsoft is once again on the hunt for new inclusions into their growing gaming-centric services and Nintendo is moving up the technological ladder with the new and improved Switch.

Upgraded Nintendo Switch will reportedly be powered by Nvidia Tech

The Switch is about to get a next-gen touch-up

Nintendo will seemingly up their game significantly with the release of an improved Switch console. According to a report coming from Bloomberg, the console will have a chip manufactured by none other than Nvidia. The new chip will reportedly be able to power and support higher-quality graphics on an OLED display and even a 4K resolution. The plan is to make full use of Nvidia’s DLSS technology that “…uses advanced AI rendering to produce image quality that’s comparable to native resolution – and sometimes even better.

This would enable Nintendo to somewhat compete with the more advanced competitors in terms of visuals. The only downside would be that the new technological goodies will probably make the Switch Pro, or whatever the name ends up being, will be a bit more expensive than the original Switch. Microsoft is really going all-in on a connected ecosystem

Microsoft is going all out on big acquisitions in hopes of making themselves an unavoidable stop for every gamer. Just on the heels of their Zenimax purchase, the tech giant has set its sight on the popular VoIP, instant messaging, and digital distribution platform Discord. The owners of Discord Inc. have been playing around with the idea of selling the company for a few days now, and this news has attracted the attention of potential buyers such as Microsoft, which has supposedly made an eye-watering offer of $10 billion. While this may seem a lot, there are other big fishes in the sea that might up that bid even more which wouldn’t be strange considering Discord’s user base. Ghost of Tsushima movie has been announced

The game itself was like a movie already but ok

We’ve seen very few high-quality samurai flicks in the past years and what story better to rekindle their flame than the one from the popular PS4 exclusive – Ghost of Tsushima? Announced recently by Deadline, a Ghost of Tsushima movie is already in the works by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. This seems to indicate that we are in for an action spectacle worthy of the source material. Although we lived through the story in the game, seeing a live-action version of an honorable and badass samurai having to use less-than-honorable means to repel the Mongol invasion of Tsushima island is something we can’t wait for. Biomutant seems like a true indie gem

The long-anticipated indie title Biomutant is finally nearing its release so it’s no wonder the developer is switching into 5th gear in terms of marketing. Just recently they released a trailer showcasing what is arguably the most important aspect of the game – the combat. In short, the trailer features the gun-fu or gun-kata type of combat where players can utilize melee and ranged weapons as well as special skills to achieve some truly stylish and deadly results. Putting this in a quirky post-apocalyptic world on top of some truly robust RPG mechanics seems like a surefire hit. Hopefully, the game turns out to be all we hope it will be. CoD is gearing up for another spectacular WWII turn

In terms of setting, Call of Duty has truly been all over the place but somehow, the franchise has always felt the most at home in modern and WWII eras. The latter seems to the period where the franchise will be returning to, albeit with a twist of sorts. According to leaks and reports, the game will be titled Vanguard and will feature an alternate version of history where WWII didn’t end in 1945. There are some other reports, most notably, the one from Eurogamer which says that the game will stay true to the historic events and won’t take the Wolfenstein route. Many gamers seem to be inclined more toward the former seeing as the franchise already explored WWII from various angles and with various characters. And I think we can all agree that CoD needs a refresh. For more details and everything we know so far about the upcoming Call of Duty game, check out our original news coverage.
