Gaming revenues rise by 1pct in April from prior month

Local gross gaming revenues have increased slightly by 1 per cent in April 2021 from the previous month to about MOP8.4 billion (US$1 billion), data published today (Saturday) by the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) reveals.

Visitor arrivals in the SAR have returned to growth since March as the pandemic is gradually controlled in Mainland China and travel restrictions were gradually lifted.

The overall number of inbound tourists reported last month was about 760,000, an average of 24,500 per day, with 34,353 visitor entries reported on April 16, the highest since the pandemic started.

In cumulative terms gaming revenues between January and April amounted to MOP32 billion, a 2.6 per cent increase year-on-year.

As for the Labour Day Golden Week, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng already indicated yesterday (Saturday) that authorities expect a greater number of mainland travellers will be reported in the SAR during the holiday period.

Authorities shave already estimated there would be a 20 per cent increase in daily visitors during the upcoming travel peak period, relative to the highest daily number recorded recently, based on hotel room booking information provided by the hotel industry.

Ho also revealed that the Macau SAR government was striving to realise a scenario whereby people either from the mainland or Macau – that reached 14 days after having been vaccinated against COVID-19 – would be able to travel between the two places without being required to present a negative nucleic acid test, a change that could also lead to an increase in visitor numbers.
