The Batman universe game Gotham Knights will run at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and with no 60fps performance modes, it’s been confirmed.
The news comes from executive producer Fleur Marty, who explained the lack of 60fps option on console on the game’s Discord server, stating that the decision came from needing to accommodate features such as untethered co-op and a large and detailed open world.
This is a rather surprising and disappointing announcement, given that the game was in development for the last generation consoles for a long time – they PS4 and Xbox One versions were only canned in May of this year – and the general trend toward offering performance modes that sacrifice resolution and other graphics detail settings in order to enable 60fps play.
Marty states that “it’s not as straight forward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS”, and it is true that with an online game and with lots of dynamic elements and AI, there could still be a burden placed on the consoles such that 30fps is the only reasonable target. Then again, lowered resolutions, dynamic scaling and dropping graphics settings are all possible in the PC version of the game, which will not be limited to 30fps.
The minimum specs for the PC version of the game have been released on Steam, for PC hardware that is capable of playing at 1080p, 60fps at low quality settings:
- CPU: Intel Core i5-9600K (3.7 GHz) OR AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.60 GHz)
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OR AMD Radeon RX 590
Compared to these specifications, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are both well in excess of this minimum bar, though it could be that these are making sacrifices to the game’s visual fidelity that WB Montreal don’t want to make.
It could also simply be that the team has not been able to prioritise creating a performance mode prior to launch – we’ve seen additional performance modes added to plenty of games in the weeks and months after launch, from Horizon Forbidden West to Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Given the backlash to this online, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team add a performance mode down the line.
