Gotham Knights will run at just 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Gotham Knights is the latest DC title from Rocksteady Studios, the studio behind the Batman Arkham series. It looks like Rocksteady isn’t looking to stray too far from its tried and tested methods, as Gotham Knights looks more like a modern Arkham title.

As the game heads closer to launch, we have been able to see glimpses of the gameplay, and so far, it looks like a four-player co-op version of the Arkham series, not that it’s necessarily a bad thing.

But, some recent news is quite worrying and could shed some light on what to expect from Gotham Knights, and it isn’t good.

Fleur “Flaoua” Marty, the Executive Producer on Gotham Knights, announced on the game’s official Discord server that “due to the types of features,” Gotham Knights will only run at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

“I know many of you are wondering about the availability of a performance mode for Gotham Knights on consoles.

Due to the types of features we have in our game, like providing a fully untethered co-op experience in our highly detailed open-world, it’s not as straightforward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS.

For this reason, our game does not have a performance/quality toggle option and will run at 30FPS on consoles.”

One of the interesting parts of the statement is that it seemed to be blamed on the game being a co-op experience; however, this shouldn’t have much impact on the demand that the game needs on an individual console or PC.

When looking at the PC requirements, the minimum specs for 1080p/60fps aren’t very demanding and are far below the specifications of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

  • Processor: Intel Core i5-9600K (3.7 GHz) OR AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.60 GHz)
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OR AMD Radeon RX 590

This could hint at optimization being the culprit, something that Rocksteady Studios is familiar with facing. It is disappointing to see as this will be the case whether you are playing at 1080p or 4K, with no improvements made regardless of resolution.

Typically, we have been seeing most games running at 60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the option to sometimes lower the FPS in exchange for a more visually pleasing game by utilizing features such as ray tracing.

But that won’t be the case with Gotham Knights, as it doesn’t appear to offer any quality enhancements such as ray tracing.
