Actor Steven Ogg, known for his role as Trevor in Grand Theft Auto 5, recently sent a cameo video to a Rockstar fan, who was surprised by the response. The fan has described the message as both “annoyed” and “berating.” Ogg’s Trevor character in Grand Theft Auto 5 is often portrayed as a loose canon, sometimes at odds with other characters in the game.
The game’s developer was recently in the news following a hacking incident, which led Rockstar Games to block social media replies. The hack revealed early footage of the studio’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, while also revealing the names of two main characters, Jason and Lucia. The intent of the Cameo video starring Ogg was to warn GTA 6‘s characters about the dangers of Vice City in the upcoming sandbox game.
Ogg’s character Trevor in Grand Theft Auto 5 is considered a hero by some, while also being considered a sort of antihero by others. GTA speed runner and YouTuber Hugo One says that they contacted Steven Ogg using the celebrity video message platform Cameo. After paying the actor $140, they asked Ogg to record a video as Trevor, warning GTA 6 characters Jason and Lucia to “be careful in Vice City” and to “watch out for cops in Port Gellhorn.” Port Gellhorn is expected to be a district in the open-world sequel to Grand Theft Auto 5. “Tell them that maybe you’ll see them out there, and feel free to be crazy,” Hugo One says they told the actor when making the Cameo request.
Ogg replied, “I’m not Trevor. My name is Steven, and I’m an actor,” before beginning to record the message requested by Hugo One. “He [Hugo One] wanted me to give you this message from Trevor, which of course, I’m not Trevor,” Ogg started. “My name is Steven, and I’m an actor. So, I get it, in a sense, and I don’t get it in a big sense as well. As actors, you portray different characters, and it would be literally impossible for me to be a cartoon. I need to get that off my chest,” Ogg went on to say before sliding into an expletive-laden rant. While Trevor is widely regarded as a wildcard, the character did display redeeming qualities during Grand Theft Auto 5.
Yet, for the purposes of the Cameo video, it appears Steven Ogg both broke character and captured the bizarre nature of Trevor from Grand Theft Auto 5. Hugo one shared the video on YouTube, explaining that while they wanted to create a cross-connection between GTA 5 and GTA 6, the video they received wasn’t exactly what they had in mind. Hugo One was surprised that Steven Ogg took such offense to the request to create a video as Trevor, given that he’s garnered worldwide fame for the role. Hugo One went on to say that it’s not uncommon for actors to create Cameo messages as the characters they’re famous for portraying, and Hugo One felt it was unnecessary for Steven Ogg to spend a few minutes berating them over the request.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
