Bad news for PS Plus subscribers hoping to get the upcoming GreedFall PS5 upgrade. If you acquired the game through PS Plus, you won’t be eligible for the free upgrade, so you’ll have to keep playing the PS4 version or fork out extra cash for the PS5 edition.
Why won’t the PS Plus version of GreedFall be eligible for the PS5 upgrade?
This news comes via the official GreedFall Twitter account. A user asks whether the upcoming PS5 upgrade, which will add enhanced visuals and better loading times, will work with “even the PlayStation Plus version”. The GreedFall devs then confirm that the PS Plus version of GreedFall is “not eligible” for the free upgrade to the PS5 version. That means if you got GreedFall via PS Plus and you want to play the new native version of GreedFall on PS5, you’ll need to buy it all over again.
The PS5 upgrade for GreedFall will add several enhancements to the game. These include improved visuals and faster loading times, “up to 4K UHD” resolution support, and a 60 FPS performance mode, among other minor tweaks and improvements. If you bought the original game on PS4 – either physically or digitally – then you’ll be eligible for the upgrade. All of these new features will be available alongside a new Gold Edition of GreedFall that will also pack in a brand new DLC campaign.
Are there any other PS Plus games that aren’t eligible for PS5 upgrades?
This isn’t the first time this has happened to a PS Plus game. Back in March this year, PS Plus subscribers were able to download Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4 as part of the subscription service. Shortly before this, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, an enhanced version of the game for PS5 with improved loading times, better visuals, and performance enhancements, as well as a brand new DLC episode starring Yuffie Kisaragi. The extra features (but not the DLC) are available as a free upgrade from the PS4 version, but this doesn’t apply if you downloaded Final Fantasy VII Remake via PS Plus.
While there are only two games that won’t support PS5 upgrades for PS Plus versions, it seems this is becoming an emerging trend with Sony and the PlayStation brand. It’s not entirely clear why this is happening. It could be that there are fees publishers, or Sony aren’t willing to pay. Recently, documents emerged suggesting that Sony had charged developers for including crossplay on PS4 games, and there could be a similar situation going on here. We’ll have to wait and see whether the PS Plus service offers any more games that won’t support PS5 upgrades. Stay tuned for more info on this.
