GRID Esports raises $10 million in funding for esports wagering data

GRID Esports, the esports-focused data analysis company, has just announced that they have completed a Series A round of funding for a total of $10 million USD. Grid Esports has attracted investors from all around the iGaming and esports world. They have received investment from Alinea Capital, Bumble Ventures, Tar Heel Capital Pathfinder, Agileo Ventures, and NFL player JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The investment

GRID Esports plan to use the major investment to grow their current data platform as well as increase their reach in the North American market. They have been operating in the esports world for three years and in that time, they have been able to improve the collection and application of esports data.

The data

The data that GRID Esports collect allows tournament organizers and game publishers to unlock the engagement and monetization potential of their official in-game data. Not only is the data useful for the publishers, but it is also a boon to anyone betting on esports events. The data provided by the company could be used in predictive models that may be able to calculate who will win matches. Data is hugely important for the traditional sports world but is sometimes overlooked in esports. It seems like GRID Esports have cracked the code.

Comments from the company and investors

GRID founder and CEO Moritz Mauer wrote: “2020 proved to be a massive growth year in the gaming and esports industry and for our company. We saw wide adoption of our technology across the most renowned players in the ecosystem, and with it, our coverage of esports events and roster of clients grew exponentially. We are in a unique position to leverage technology to standardize esports data by embracing the digital nature of the sport and do so in alignment with rights holders in the space such as game publishers and tournament operators.”

William Hatle, Portfolio Manager and Partner of one of the major investors, Alinea Capital also added: “We are impressed by the early success of Moritz and his team, already establishing GRID as the esports data market leader. We believe GRID’s unmatched esports knowledge and intense focus on delivering top service to its partners and clients is the reason for their success and will continue to be so in the future.”

The company

Grid Esports launched its data platform in 2018 during the Face-It London Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major tournament. They quickly secured other major players in the esports industry like WePlay and FLASHPOINT. Now, the company provides data from almost every major esports title in the world.

They entered the North American market in 2020 and have had quite a lot of success in the region. Data provided by the company is being provided to America’s first esports-only sportsbook launched at SkyUte Casino in Colorado. With this new round of funding and their plans for the region, I would expect to see them make some major inroads in the rest of the US during 2021.
