GTA 5 PC Gets Unofficial Performance Boost Thanks to AMD FSR Mod

GTA V may be almost a decade old, but its passionate community keeps surprising everybody with unique mods that don’t let the game show its age. One such fan has managed to add AMD’s FSR upscaling technology to the game, massively boosting its visual clarity and performance.

The modder, NarutoUA1337 on reddit, has added support for the feature before AMD even released the source code to the public.

Additionally, the modder has also released the source code for the mod on Github, which can be used by others to give their own GTA V copy, and potentially other games, a massive visual boost.

Of course, the key point of the video is to show the comparison between the game’s native upscaler and FSR, and it looks like AMD’s investment into the long-gestating technology has paid off. It should be noted that FSR does not improve a game’s performance if it’s already getting bottlenecked at its internal resolution. PC gaming hardware has come a long way since Grand Theft Auto V hit store shelves, and it shows in the comparison video that NarutoUA has posted.

Developers across the PC gaming landscape have made it clear that implementing FSR into games is an extremely simple process. A third party mod making it even easier to add FSR unofficially to games is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. With the technology being open source, unlike Nvidia’s DLSS, it’s only a matter of time till we see mod hosting sites like Nexus Mods welcome it with open arms.

GTA V is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and the new-gen consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility. The game is set to be re-released in an enhanced form for the PlayStation 5 later this year.
