Pokken Tournament was something a lot of fans didn’t think they wanted. The line of thought was that if you wanted a fighting game with Pokemon, you could just play Super Smash Bros.
However, that notion was somewhat dispelled after fans saw what Pokken Tournament had to offer: 1v1 battles against all kinds of different Pokemon, seamlessly shifting between 3D arena battles and 2D side-scrolling battles. It was a fighting game unlike any other.
The DX rerelease for the Nintendo Switch brought the game back into the limelight after its initial release on the Wii U and arcades, adding a handful of new characters to the roster and becoming the definitive way to play the game.
With over a million copies sold, and even the game’s producer and the producer of the Tekken series, Katsuhiro Harada, expressing interest in a Pokken Tournament sequel if Nintendo was up for it, we here at IGN Southeast Asia certainly think that it is a no-brainer to make a sequel to this game.
So, if ever there was a sequel and in honour of the game’s fifth anniversary, here are five Pokemon that deserve to have a spot in the game:
Urshifu
This kungfu-based Pokemon was first introduced in the Isle of Armor expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield, and is definitely a perfect fit for this fighting game. Its two forms, Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style, change the way Urshifu fights and its secondary typing as well. Having this be Urshifu’s core mechanic in the game, where it can change stances freely, would make it similar to Siegfried in SoulCalibur V or Nightwing in the Injustice games.
Toxtricity
Generation VIII introduced some killer starters in its lineup, but one of the most iconic Pokemon to come out of this generation was the Electric/Poison type, Toxtricity. Its rockstar demeanor, the Amped and Low Key forms that are based on electric guitar and bass guitar respectively, makes it such a cool Pokemon to be included. It can definitely be a zoner-type character, unleashing waves of electricity and poison, all while rocking out to the game’s BGM.
Blacephalon
We don’t have a playable Ultra Beast in the game just yet, so we would like to propose the most extraordinary out of all the interdimensional Pokemon, the clown-like Blacephalon. While its Fire/Ghost typing is a lot like Chandelure, who is already in the game, Blacephalon’s otherworldliness is different enough to make it stand out. We definitely see this creepy monster as a sort of Voldo from SoulCalibur, Necro from Street Fighter, or any other weirdo fighting game characters.
Venusaur
With the DX expansions to Pokken Tournament, Blastoise and Charizard are both fighters in the game. So it’s only right that the Grass-type starter and overall best boy, Venusaur, gets to be in as well. We also need more quadrupedal monsters in fighting games in general, with Suicune being the sole quadrupedal fighter in the game. Make Venusaur a heavy sumo wrestler type, like E.Honda from Street Fighter or Ganryu from Tekken, and mix it up with Venusaur’s signature moves like Solar Beam or Razor Leaf. That’s truly all we need.
Regigigas
The leader of the legendary Regis should be a fun addition to the Pokken Tournament roster. He’s big, strong, and can definitely have the rest of the Regis as support characters as well. The roster also doesn’t have a Normal type representative yet, so why not make it a Legendary? Regigigas could definitely be a grappler type of fighter, who able to grab his opponents and toss them around like Zangief.
